A Web Nerd’s Eugoogely
Effective this past Monday, April 3rd 2006, Hinkyboxdotcom is no longer hosted from a basement on a frankenserver. Though it was quite nice to be root and have 100GB of space to myself, my upcoming move will require at least a few months of portability, so I decided to cough up a few hundred dollars and get an (mt) account like I should have done months ago.
I’ll miss you, webhog. Sure, a unconfigurable EISA SCSI daughterboard made it impossible to boot you remotely, and sure, you only had five of your six RAID disks, and sure, running Fedora Core caused a few stability problems now and then, and sure – you sounded like a freight train with Tourette’s, but you never imploded too badly and your uptime was nothing to sneeze at.
Now, a poem:
Adieu, Web Hogger. Adieu,
You made my blog exist.
Adieu, Web Hogger. Adieu,
I hit you with my fist.
Adieu, Web Hogger. Adieu,
You'll not soon be forgotten.
Adieu, Web Hogger. Adieu,
And Comcast never knew.

8 Missives So Far

There is something that is very touching about the bond between and his server. Will you be having it bronzed?

So, after looking at the photos in your Ode to Web Hogger, I have to ask: Is that an old Gateway/ALR server as your disk array? I initially saw that second photo with the Gateway logo, and I kind of snickered.
To be honest, I used to have an ALR server in my old office that ran NetWare for a nice long stretch. The damn thing just stayed up in a corner, and it was nice to have it around. The only problem was I could hear those SCSI disks whirring away enough to disturb any moment of deep thought I might be in.
In honor of the retired Web Hogger, I will pour a little beer out for it later this week. ;-)

I hate to admit it, but I'm kind of aroused right now.

tfg - nope. It's going into service as a dedicated local streaming midget porn server.
Jason - Yeah, it is an old Gateway /ALR Dual 6 with TWO Pentium Pros @ 166 per. And yes, it was a netware server in a previous life -- I believe my brother *ahem* 'rescued' it from McCormick spices up in Hunt Valley. When it gets really hot, it smells like a Morrocan restaurant.
The monitor belonged to the first and last Gateway computer I will ever buy, long since dismembered -- but the Compaq Deskpro SFF is my trusty Smoothwall appliance, and being that it is a) small and b) sturdier than the average PIX, it is probably going to be my firewall until my internet pipe gets bigger than 100Base-TX. :)
MB - Thanks. Webhogger was my muse.
ACW - If you need to sneak off and rub one out in the head, we understand.

Excellent. I expect nothing less than complete dedication when it comes to the dissemination of midget porn.

I used to really be into the frankencomputers -- I had an array of hodgepodged together computers. But the problem is that they always break -- something always goes wrong, and nothing is ever under warranty. I've since bought an HP and a Mac, and I'm happy as a clam. Good luck with your moves!
And I love the new design.

geez, it almost feels like there's going to be some big, nerdy, testosterone-induced circle jerk sometime soon and I'm feeling the need to perhaps avert my eyes or something. On the other hand I do understand... it was your baby. May her parts never rust.
